The SVD - Societas Verbi Divini (Latin), Society of the Divine Word (English) or popularly Divine Word Missionaries is an international religious missionary congregation for men founded by St. Arnold Janssen in 1875 in Steyl, Holland. At present there are more than 6,000 SVDs working in over 70 countries worldwide. In India, the Divine Word Missionaries arrived in Indore, Madhya Pradesh in 1932 and in 1948 the SVDs made their presence in Bandra, Mumbai as part of Indore Province. There are more than 730 Indian SVDs and around 225 are working in foreign missions.
Charism of the SVD’s is to preach the Word of God where it is not done or insufficiently done. This charism is translated into action through various ministries. In India Mumbai Province (INM) we work in the areas of pastoral care, mission animation, retreat centers, educational apostolate, social service centers, media & communication studies and formation programs (seminaries).
