Divine Word Seminary, Pune is the Alma Mater and pride of the SVDs. The final years of formal training and formation are spent here at Divine Word Seminary (DWS). The seminary was blessed and inaugurated on the 2 nd of February 1958. The first rector was Fr Zeitler and in 1972, Fr Joe Peringallor became the first Indian rector. The first batch of Indian SVDs was ordained priests during the academic year 1959-60. Today the Divine Word Seminary is the Alma Mater of more than 650 SVD priests and brothers who work in India and abroad.
The main thrust of Divine Word Seminary is to strengthen the intellect of its members through theological and scriptural studies in Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth and especially by developing a specific area of interest like communication and Missiology in view of future specialization and the frontier mission situation. To add a practical touch to the intellectual learning, we undertake social and pastoral ministries during the week end. We search for spiritual meaning of our lives by deepening our commitment to the person of Jesus Christ through our profound reflection on Scripture and theology, and celebration of various liturgical activities. We, coming from all the four sides of India, live as one community and deepen the spirit of community living by sharing and caring for one another. We also undergo various formation programs to strengthen the affective or emotional identity, which help us grow emotionally matured and to live fully as humans.
For the last five decades the Divine Word Seminary has dedicated herself in shaping the young SVDs to set out and work across the globe.
